06/30/06 UPDATE! Kasay is almost there! There is complete closure at some of the narrower points farther down his back and the widest section will probably have sealed up in about a week or so. Kasay is doing well in all respects. We are still working on house-training, though. If you take him out at intervals, he does just fine, but otherwise, he will not give any kind of signal that he needs to go and will pee in the house without hesitation. He does, however, go through the night with no accidents and he is not crated. We're still working on the cringing/crouching issue when we reach down to pet him and he is cautious, but won't duck and tuck his tail unless you're making loud noises or fast movements. We plan on posting a full bio and making Kasay's status 'Adoptable' by no later than the 3rd.

06/19/06 UPDATE! Check out Kasay's new pic! His wound is still shrinking and all around the edges, the old, dead skin is falling off and fresh new skin is being revealed! It's been nearly a week since the last pictures and, as you can tell, Kasay is also starting to grow his fur back in the shaved areas. He's doing incredibly well and when he goes outside, likes to tear around the yard and rear up, waving his front paws like a horse! He has gotten to the point where his back is no longer sore, but itchy! He will run back and forth, back and forth along the couch, rubbing and rubbing his back because he can't get at it with the cone on. As you can see, this will usually take the scab off and so we have to apply some more antibiotic or aloe and give him a chewie bone to keep him busy so he won't keep scratching. He has actually started rolling over onto his back to have his tummy rubbed, so we know that the infection has pretty much gone, but Kasay will continue on his antibiotics for the rest of this week, just to be sure. We are looking forward to the day when the new skin has come in completely and we can take off that annoying cone for good! Thanks again to all those who have been giving so generously to Kasay's Fund. We're slowly but surely reaching our goal of covering all his vet costs!

06/13/06 UPDATE! Kasay is doing very well. For the past two days we've removed the bandages to let a little fresh air get to the wound. We've eased up on the sulfadiazene and have been applying aloe primarily. This, along with the fresh air, has helped immensely. Kasay's e-collar keeps him from licking and biting at his back, but we've had someone constantly watching him so that he would not scratch at himself. We have been trying to take the collar off at intervals to give him a break from it and he will just curl up on the couch and snooze. He can't help but try and lick every now and then, but each time we gently push his head away and he'll lay down once more with a sigh.

As you will see with the new pics, the wound has developed a nice, scabbed/hard layer and has shrunk noticeably. We're going to leave the bandaging off tonight and see what happens. If we find that Kasay has refrained from any scratching, we will continue to leave the wound open and continue to apply topical antibiotics.

Today, Kasay went without his pain medication and did very well. He was much friskier and has been trying to play with his foster siblings. He was of a mind to start tearing around the yard with them, but we're trying to keep him on a somewhat-low activity level until the scab on his back has become a little more solid.

To all those who have been making donations and visiting our store in the past 24 hours... thank you once again from Kasay and from all of us with Crossroads. With your continued support, we will be able to cover Kasay's medical expenses and get this boy healed up!

Bio: Please let us introduce you to Kasay! He is a tender-hearted little Dachshund mix who has had a tough time recently in his life. Kasay came into rescue with a few, minor scratches on his back and shoulder and it appeared that he had been in a tussle with another dog. But, within 36 hours, Kasay's condition dramatically worsened and a few patches of crusty fur became a horrible-looking, oozing, bloody area spreading down his back and spine location. The tiny spots on his back were actually the very edges of a major infected area that had begun to surface.

Kasay was taken to the vet when it became obvious to his foster family that topical antibiotics and aloe were not going to do the trick. At the vet, he was gingerly shaved, clipped and cleaned. Even after getting a good look at the raw mess that lay below all of Kasay's beautiful red fur, the vet could only guess at what had caused it. Possibly a poisonous bite from an insect or another dog/animal that had spread, causing infection and deteriorating the healthy tissue; possibly some sort of chemical or sun burn... it was anyone's best guess and will probably forever remain a mystery. Kasay received injections of antibiotics and pain medication at the vet and was sent home with more antibiotics and pain killer in pill form and a topical cream for the raw areas. We found out that the remainder of the dark patch of skin on Kasay's back was technically dead and was more or less "floating" on a puddle of fluids. As the antibiotics started to spread and kill the infection, the skin would begin to slough off. You will see the progress of this in the photos. At this point, we are hoping that the topicals will start the healing process on the open wounds and the internal antibiotics begin arresting the infection.

This little guy has been incredible through the entire process; a real trooper. He is very cooperative and patient. He will squeal and shake when we change his bandages and apply more cream, turning his head to lick at our hands and his wounds, but has never snapped, snarled or attempted to bite. His sweet personality will not allow it.

We are also working on Kasay's trust with humans. He seems to have had some abuse in his previous home, as whenever we reach down to love and rub him, he crouches and cowers down to the ground. We are now letting him reach up to us as we slowly lower our hand to him. What a sweet, sweet dog to have had such a rough time in life.

We are committed to nursing this pup back to health and seeing him get to his forever home with a loving family. We will be posting updates as he improves.
