Update & Goodbye - 07.24.10: Yesterday, beautiful Emmie left this world for doggie heaven. Emmie was known best for her "eyeliner" eyes, her soft long ears, her mischievous ways, and most of all, her love of treats - or really anything edible. She was an expert counter-surfer, once consuming an entire bag of yeasty, Amish Friendship bread dough. Yet, despite the repercussions to her digestive tract, she was never deterred from her counter-surfing ways. She was a master escape artist, often affectionately referred to as "Houdini" for her incredible talent of escaping from kennels, crates and thru any fence gate. But, she was never selfish about sharing her talent, even opening the pool gate for the other dogs at doggie camp in the midst of January... resulting in a note in her permanent file at Camp Wagging Tails. She loved nothing better than a good ride in the car with the windows down and the wind flapping her ears. Well, a belly rub may have ranked higher, or maybe an apple, or peanut butter. Always able to find her way into trouble, God made her pretty for a reason, so she could always get out of it with one look of those sad eyes. She had many fans, most especially her young friends that loved to pet her and take her for walks (though I think most of the time she was walking them). But above all, she was an always faithful companion who is dearly missed. She was sent with instructions to find Loopy, Sunny, Ally, JD and all the other great dogs that have gone before her, with a promise that they would take good care of her. With any luck, she's already caught a few squirrels! --In Loving Memory of Emmie Update - 02.28.09: I am sitting at the kitchen bar and Emmie is patiently waiting for the rain to stop. She has been waiting a long time for her daily walk! I thought you would appreciate her latest shenanigan. If I need to go out of town these days she has to go to Camp Wagging Tails. She overstayed her welcome at my friend's farm because he couldn't keep her in the kennel at night. Her nickname is Houdini. On this Christmas night, she managed to get out of her kennel, got her food bag, and needless to say, had quite the Christmas feast by eating the remainder of her food (a 3 day supply) and the rest of her treats. So last time I took her to Camp Wagging Tails; it was in late January. When I came to pick her up, the first thing they said was, "Emmie is a very smart dog." My response was of course, "What did she do this time?" Well, she decided to entertain the other dogs and opened the gate to the doggie swimming pool so all the dogs could go swimming in the middle of winter. They couldn't figure out why all the retrievers were running around soaking wet. And there's Emmie with the gate open. They're still not sure how she got it open. Can't you just picture her holding the gate open, waving the other dogs in? I promise you there is a reason God made her pretty, because one look with those eyes and all you can do is shake your head and laugh. --Lisa An update (07.05.08): I thought I would drop you a quick note with Emmie’s latest adventure. The last two weeks were my trip out of the country (to Israel) so Emmie went to stay at a coworker/friends farm. He has 2 other dogs which she has gradually become friends with, Bella (a 9 month lab) and Banjo (a 6 year old lab). She and Bella are farm pals, running around on the farm finding mischief, while Banjo stays back at the house. Jason was pulling their Ranger/Gator out of the garage and left it running while he got out to put the garage door down. Bella and Emmie jumped in and started playing and wrestling, one of them (culprit still unknown) laid on the gas pedal and floored it into the back of Jason’s Suburban. We’re wondering if the insurance company is going to believe that a dog caused the damage. Dogs are safe and sound! She also taught Bella how to dig holes and bury bones; her last visit she taught her how to catch squirrels. She’s adjusting back to her usual life as an office dog… Take care, Lisa Update - 12.08.07: A note from Lisa... I thought I’d give you a quick update on Emmie’s latest accomplishments. First I don’t believe even you all know how talented a dog she is and the extents to which she will go for a treat...she has learned not only where the doggie snacks in my office and a coworker's officer are located, which is the desk drawer, but she has officially learned how to open the drawer to get her snacks out. I finally caught her in the act! She puts her paw in the handle and pulls! She is too smart for her own good, or mine. Second, she has finally made her first doggie friend, and I’d venture to say she has a new little boyfriend. After months of growling, barking and scaring Gatsby away, she has finally decided he is a pretty good playmate. Gatsby is the chocolate lab who also comes to the office every day. It’s been quite entertaining to watch, simply because Gatsby, who is larger than her, has been so scared of her he won’t look her in the eye. He’ll come down to my office for a snack or to see if she wants to play, but just keeps on walking by when he hears the low growl from my sweet puppy. They have now started to chase each other down the halls and pounce on each other (most co-workers find it amusing). But, this week she searched him out and drove me crazy until I took her upstairs to find him so they could play! I had to make her leave the conference room this week because Gatsby was nicely minding his own business sleeping under the table when she snuck up on him and pounced. We’re still learning the appropriate times for play...in otherwords, not in the middle of a meeting. But, I’m so proud of her because she hasn’t had a doggie friend that she didn’t scare off or one that was patient enough to put up with her, but Gatsby stuck it out. We also think maybe she was playing hard to get in the beginning. --Lisa Emmie is doing very well with her knew mom, Lisa. Lisa says Emmie is her new alarm clock, jumping up into bed at about 5:30 most mornings and then curling up for another little snooze when she's told she has to wait just one more hour. Then, at exactly 6:30, the sloppy wet kisses and insistent, shoving paws start until mom gets up out of bed! When it comes to food Emmie is basically a doggie garbage disposal! Lisa has been trying to discourage begging for people food by letting Emmie try things dogs normally don't like. Apparently, this has not been much of a success, as Emmie eats everything from peanuts in the shell to peppermint Lifesavers! Lisa takes Emmie to the office where she works on a regular basis and says everyone there has fallen in love with Em's sweet hound dawg face and personality. Showering her with pats and treats, they always ask Lisa where she got such a great dog! --Lisa |
